Ramon Bermund de Taradell and his followers claim rights over land held by Arbert Salamó. Arbert is willing to prove his claim by ordeal but a compromise is arranged whereby he will make an annual payment in return for protection.
Let it be known to all men now and in the future that I, Ramon Bermund, along with my castellans Bernat Berenguer and Bernat Guillem, argued a legal dispute with Arbert Salamó and his heirs before the entrance to the church of Santa Eugenia in the presen
ce of many clerics, knights and rustics. I, Ramon Bermund and my castellans claimed rights of protection and jurisdiction [baiulia] over the manse of Serra. Et Arbert and his heirs responded that we never had this right, nor anyone of our family before
us. Juding this case Guillem Borrell d'Eures and Pere Miró de Muntanyola decided that Ramon Bermund and his castellans should prove that this right of protection and jurisdiction had been exercised in the past by the lords of Taradell, for which they cou
ld supply no evidence. And afterwards Arbert was ready to prove [his claim] by his body. When mass had been said and Arbert was about to place his hand in the cauldron that boiled in front of the church of Santa Eugenia, those above-mentioned [opponents
of his] cried that they would not accept this decision. After this, with the counsel of Guillem Ramon de Taradell, Guillem Borrell, Bernat Ermengol, ns Dalmau, brothers, and Pere Miró, Berenguer Amalric, Pere Sumar, Ramon Guifre, Bernat Guillem, and Ama
t Salamó and many other men who were present, it was decided that Arbert and his heirs should give 3 quarters of feed-grain and 3 hens to Ramon Bermund and his castellans. And for this annual payment [censum] that they received, they would
defend Arbert and his progeny, their bodies, wealth and property everywhere against all men and women and if they failed in this, they should not receive the payments. And if they defended faithfully as described above, they should receive the above-ment
ioned payments, and it is acknowledged that they should extort anything, nor receive anything beyond this annual payment. Done 5 kalends of May in the 40th year of the reign of King Phillip. Signed: Ramon Bermund, Bernat Berenguer, Bernat Guillem: we
who praise, define and confirm as written above. Signed Pere Sumer, Ramon Gaufred, Amat Salamó, Bernat Guillem.
Guillem, priest, wrote this on the day and in the year given above. Ramon, priest, faithfully transcribed this on 15 kalends of July, in the 25th year of reign of King Louis the Younger.
