Agreement between Pere, Bishop of Vic and Berenguer de Taradell and his family over castles, fields and other property in Taradell and Vic.
June 20, 1168.
In the name of God. This is an agreement [conveniencia] made between
me, Pere, Bishop of Vic, and you, Berenguer de Taradell, your wife Titbores and your
daughter Titbores who is to be valid and firm between us and my successors and your
successors in perpetuity, First, I give you in fief five good morabetins [a unit of money]
which are given annually between the feasts of Saint Michael and All Saints to you and
your successors holding the castle of Taradell. In this connection I confirm to you and
your successors all the fiefs that your predecessors held of the bishop of Vic or the Church
of St. Peter in whatever locations, except for that field that had recently been built-up on
the western side of the town of Vic, and except for six sesters of barley, and except for the
third part of protection revenues [baiulia], and except for those houses that adjoin
my palace.
And I, the abovenamed Berenguer de Taradell and my wife Titbores and my
daughter Titbores, agree with you, Bishop Pere, that we will be faithful to you, your body
and all its members, and all your property that you have or will have, and for all the
property of Saint Peter wherever it is or will be. We will maintain your right and that of
the Church of Saint Peter and its canons against all men and women as you direct or wish,
except the king and his successors. In this connection, moreover, we define to you and all
your successor bishops and the Church of Saint Peter and its canons now and in perpetuity
the entire property of Mulist and Valle which my deceased father, Ramon Pere de
Taradell, gave to the chapter of Saint Peter along with his son Guillem, and we give up the
document in which this was enacted and signed. In the same fashion, we define the above-
named field which has been built up at the western exit of the town of Vic, with all its
appurtenances, and the said six sesters of barley, and third part of protection revenues, and
the houses adjoining your palace with their appurtenances and utilities. Beyond this we
agree that we shall never give, sell nor pledge for a loan those five morabetins but shall
always retain them in our power. We make this aforesaid agreement and renunciation in
such fashion as it can best remain stable, firm, and inviolate for all time as described
above. If, moreover, anyone should wish to disrupt it, let him not prevail but rather pay a
double fine, and for all this may it remain as stated in eternity.
