| [279] aranzada | an areal measure of land, equivalent to 0.447 hectares or a little over an acre. |
| arenga | the opening preamble of a charter. |
| aureus | a gold coin assumed to have been imported from Islamic Spain, where such coins were termed dirhems or mithqals. |
| carta abierta | a letter-patent. |
| chirographum | an indenture; hence, any deed recording an agreement between two or more parties. |
| chrismon | the Chi-Rho monogram which sometimes precedes the opening preamble of a charter |
| concejo | the local community assembled to trasact business; hence, a village or urban council; Latin, concilium. |
| dispositio | the matter of a charter (as opposed to its formal diplomatic elements). |
| duplarius | a member of a cathedral chapter who performed, as a substitute, the duties of one of the principal dignitaries. |
| fonsadera | a money-payment in commutation of military service. |
| francesa | the post-Carolingian miniscule script of France (as opposed to the Visigothic script of Spain). |
| fuero de población | charter issued by a lord to a group of settlers, defining rights and obligations: in an urban context a fuero means a bourough-charter. |
| iantar | a lord's right to hospitality at the expense of his tenants; a money-payment in lieu thereof. |
| levita | a deacon. |
| pesquisador | one commissioned by the king to conduct a royal pesquisa, or inquest. |
| portionarius | a minor canon (?). |
| prestimonium | a tenancy, fief or benefice. |
| privilegio rodado | a royal diploma authenticated by the king's rueda (q.v.). |
| repoblación | re-settlement, normally of lands conquered from the Moors. |
| repoblador | a settler. |
| [280] rueda | a device in the form of two concentric circles containing a legend, derived from the rota of the papal chancery, used in Spain for the authentication of certain classes of beneficial document (cf. privilegio rodado). |
| señorío | a territorial lordship, its holder normally enjoying certain fiscal and judicial immunities. |
| signum | a written device occurring in various forms (e.g. a monogram, a rueda) used for the authentication of documents. |
| sur double queue | sealing on a parchment tag inserted through a slit in a fold at the foot of the document. |
| sur simple queue | sealing on a tongue of parchment cut horizontally at the foot of the document but not severed from it. |
| tenente | the governor of a territory below the crown; the holder of a prestimonium (q.v.). |
| tercia | the third part of a tithe. |
| terciarius | an episcopal official charged with the duty of collecting the tercia (q.v.). due to the bishop. |
| votos de Santiago | an annual render of produce from throughout Christian Spain, claimed by the see of Santiago de Compostela on the authority of documents forged or interpolated c. 1140. |
