Appendix B

Royal charters referred to in the text

About 170 charters issued by the rulers of León, for the most part beneficial diplomas, have been cited in the course of this book. They range in time from the early ninth century to the late twelfth. In order to avoid cumbersome footnotes I have referred to them simply by the form 'R. + date', where 'R.' indicates 'royal charter': e.g. R. 22 July 1109. Nearly all Leonese royal charters of this period are dated by day, month and year. A few bear only month-and-year dates, or year-only dates; very occasionally royal charters are undated, and internal textual evidence has to be used to provide an approximate date: such charters are referred to by the appropriate forms, e.g. R. December 1075, R. 1127 or R. 866 X 910.

All the charters cited are listed in chronological order in this appendix, with references. My aim has been to furnish references in the shortest and simplest possible form: for lack of space I have deliberately, if reluctantly, eschewed any discussion of individual documents -- of questions of provenance, manuscript tradition, modern publication, authenticity, and so forth. It need hardly be pointed out that many of the documents cited do raise insistent and difficult questions of this order. All I have sought to do, however, is to direct the reader as briefly as possible to modern discussion of them or, in the case of unpublished documents, to the texts themselves.

Wherever possible I have provided a reference to one of four principal catalogues, namely:

(a) M. R. García Alvarez, 'Catálogo de documentos reales de la alta edad media referentes a Galicia (714-1109)', Compostellanum 8 (1963), 301-75; 9 (1964), 639-77; 10 (1965), 257-328; 11 (1966), 257-340; 12 (1967), 255-68, 581-636. This will be referred to as García, DRG, [310] followed by the number of the document. This is the only comprehensive catalogue of royal charters relating to Galicia issued before 1109, and though it is not absolutely without blemish it is an invaluable work of reference. It should be noted that it includes instruments issued on the authority of members of the royal family other than the reigning monarch, e.g. Raymond of Burgundy, count of Galicia, the son-in-law of Alfonso VI: no attempt has been made to differentiate these in the lists which follow.

(b) Bernard F. Reilly, The kingdom of León-Castilla under queen Urraca, 1109-1126 (Princeton, 1982). The footnotes to this work provide what is now the best guide to the charters not only of queen Urraca but also of her son Alfonso Raimúndez before his accession to the throne of LeónCastile on his mothers death in 1126. It will be referred to, as elsewhere in this book, as Reilly, Urraca, and page references will be given to the first occurrence of each charter cited in the narrative section of the book, that is chapters 1-6.

(c) P. Rassow, 'Die Urkunden Kaiser Alfons VII.von Spanien, Archiv für Urkundenforschung 10 (1928), 327-467; 11(1930), 66-137. The first part of this study includes at pp. 415-67 a catalogue of all Alfonso VII's charters known to the author. Although the quality of Rassows work is of the highest, many charters which were inaccessible to him when he conducted his researches some sixty years ago have since then become available. Where possible I give page references to Rassows catalogue; elsewhere to printed or manuscript sources.

(d) J. González, Regesta de Fernando II (Madrid, 1943), is the essential guide to the charters of Fernando II (1157- 88), of which a few have been cited in this work. I have abbreviated the title to GRF and given page references to the royal charters catalogued at pp. 345-517.

Few royal documents from peninsular kingdoms other than León have been cited in this work. Two Aragonese royal charters
have been mentioned: Pedro I's grant of urban property in Huesca to the church of Santiago in March 1098 is to be found in A. Ubieto Arteta, Colección diplomática de Pedro I de Aragon y Navarra (Zaragoza, 1951), no. 48; Alfonso I's grant to the monastery of Samos of 13 July 1110 is printed as an appendix to R. A. Fletcher, 'Obispos olvidados del siglo XII de las diócesis de Mondoñedo y Lugo, Cuadernos de Estudios Gallegos 28 (1973), 318-25 (and I may permit myself to say that the inaccuracies of this edition are owing to the circumstance that the author was afforded no opportunity of correcting the proofs before publication).

[316] Several royal charters from Portugal have been cited. All such documents have been published in Documentos Medievais Portugueses: Documentos Régios, vol. I (Lisbon, 1958): the quality of the editing and critical apparatus in this magnificent work cannot be too highly praised. In my footnotes I have referred to it under the abbreviation DMP.
